Documentary Analysis - Lara Croft

Type of documentary: mixed documentary.

Themes: representation of woman, sexualisation, gaming culture and power of new media.

Narrative structure: closed, single strand, non linear.

Camerawork: interviews- close ups, medium close ups and big close ups. Titled frame, low key lighting, super imposition - editor on screen, montage, point of view shots. Tracking - cyber cafe. Over the shoulder shots.

Mise en scene: chromakey, game footage, changed focus of game so attention focused on the interviewee, low key lighting and front prjection of light.

Sound: voice over - male, young, well spoken, standard English. Guns. Music over talking - dance style up beat - reflects the action. Music from the game, lara's voice, motor bike, gunshots, birds tweeting, no interview questions.

Editing: fast editing, quick cuts, super imposition.

Archive material: film clips, websites, game footage, Barbie, Advert, magazine covers, intervew with Angelina Jolie.

Graphics: Right or left - depending where the person is. Name and profession, white sans serif, lower case, anchors the meaning.

Documentary Analysis - Marketing Meatloaf

Type of documentary: mixed documentary.

Themes: power of media, manipulation of the audience, marketing and music industry and image creation.

Narrative structure: single-strand, non linear, closed narrative, circular.

Camerawork: interviews- close ups, medium close ups and big close ups -conventional. Left and right aligned. Profile shot - observing as an audience (voyeur). Handheld camera work during press scenes - shot from the press' point of view.

Mise-en-scene: chromoakey, green screen, music videos, virgin records in the background - relevant to the topic.

Sound: Meatloaf's music, voice over - young, well spoken male, speaking standard English. The voice over is opinionated and sarcastic which is not conventional. Tense music when the charts were being read out, music played over people talking.

Editing: conventional - generally didn't hear the question, quick cuts, elliptical editing, montage - news programs, slow motion, spin on images, dissolves on interviews.

Archive material: news broadcast, Brit awards, American news, music videos, CD covers and computer footage.

Graphics: title of program - the music bizz, name of person and profession - white sans serif font type. Credits scrolling across the screen - un conventional, super imposed graphics.

The Devil Made Me Do It

Type of documentary: it is a mixed documentary.

Themes: death, religion, disaffected youth culture/society, power of the media, Good vs Evil and the lack of communication between parents and children.

Narrative Structure: the documentary is an open narrative which allows the audience to make up their own mind at the end, it is non linear and has one single strand.

Camerawork: the interviews in the documentary are shot in either medium close ups or close ups. They are shot in a conventional way with the interviewee on the right looking at the interviewer and not the camera. The interview with Manson is shot in a slight low angle to give him more power, the religious monuments are also shot in a slight low angle making a connection between both Manson and religion giving the theme of Good vs Evil (God vs Manson). One side of Mansons face is light up giving the contrast of light and dark which emphasises the theme of Good vs Evil. Long shot of the location is used to establish the place and time of day. Whip pans are used on the shots of Mansons' gigs.

Mise-en-scene: religious iconography e.g. crosses and statues. Streets to show where it happened. Gothic clothing and make up. A contrast is used between the quiet streets and busy party atmoshphere to emphasise the theme of Good vs Evil.

Sound: Voiceover- a young, well spoken male, standard English. Different voiceovers are used for translations depending on who's speaking. Religious music, church bells. Digetic sound- heartbeat, stabbing sounds, dog barking. Mansons last words "I spent more time speaking to their kids than their parents did".

Editing: Eliptical editing, quick cuts, cross cuts, montage, slow motion.

Archive material: Diary, police reports, pictures, newpapers, Mansons gigs, interviews, Mansons music videos, TV shows, American news reports.

Graphics: Dates, names, places, profession - bottom left, sans serif font type - conventional. Subtitles - sans serif font type. Graphics to close the narrative.
